本次演講以 Dual Use, Civilisation “Fatigue” and Planetary Ethics 為題，將從人工智慧、核能、生物科技、化石燃料與地球工程等案例切入，討論科技如何一方面推動人類進步，另一方面也可能帶來新的文明風險。

Prof. Butler 將進一步指出，人類對科技進步的高度自信，可能已使我們低估了科技成功背後累積的風險。本演講也將邀請師生從地球整體與未來世代的角度，重新思考科技發展所牽動的倫理責任。

（Humans now have a quasi-global civilisation. Even in remote areas with little formal education solar panels and mobile phones are enabling the unprecedented connection of people and cultures. But progress is not inevitable. This talk will use seven case studies of “dual use” technology and scientists (fossil fuel combustion, Fritz Haber, nuclear fission, Werner von Braun, synthetic biology, artificial intelligence and geo-engineering) to explore broader implications relevant to our flourishing as a planetary civilisation. It will argue that the success of technology has led to over-confidence, even hubris, that now threatens the unravelling of civilisation.）
